For years, even before IFS, I’ve drawn the Yellow Heart and used it as my logo because it reminds me to REMEMBER who I BE from an energetic and loving presence with myself.

I use the yellow/gold heart to help me remember that my essence is love and my true nature. The yellow heart also reminded me that my head and thinking parts, while brilliant, are not my core source being, that is in my heart. I can connect my head (or any of my parts) with my SELF-ENERGY by breathing into my heart.

When I came across IFS – and CORE SELF was represented – I KNEW that my yellow heart would expand to symbolize SELF Energy.

I often use this metaphor with my business owner clients – and if it resonates, I lead them in a meditation to see what “color” their SELF-heart is. Some are blue, one is red and gold, one is rainbow, and another is “fruity pebbles.” The clients KNOW what language and imagery help them identify & connect with this SELF-Energy.

If your SELF-Energy were color and energy – what color would your heart be ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’œ๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿค๐Ÿงกโค๏ธ๐Ÿ’žโค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’Ÿ

Dreaming in Spanish with Sara Alvarado (and writing your story).

Live, it’s Allison Crow and Sara Alvarado!

We are going to be talking about telling your story and Sara’s new book,
Dreaming In Spanish: An Unexpected Love Story in Puerto Vallarta.

I adored this book! And I really did start thinking in Spanish after reading it.  It’s a story of healing, of unexpected and profound love. It’s a story of combining cultures and families, and so much more.  I hope you will enjoy this conversation and I know you will love Sara’s book.

Love,

Allison

Personal development and coaching can be so fuckeryish. Here’s my example this morning:

I start to journal… “what if XYZ was possible… “
and then I get smacked in the head with,

“but love what is.”

Well, which is it Love what is or have the courage to change what is?
Our thinking parts and shoulds and try so hard to get it right parts battling it out.
That’s always a good sign to drop deeper into your belly and heart and listen.

Call for your true SELF to come forward and whisper inner truth to you – instead of taking on the mandate of the gurus and leaders and coachy-coachy and anything outside of you.

Those tools and rules aren’t bad – in fact, you have a Mary Poppins bag of resources, but in any giv
en moment, seek your inner wisdom for guidance on what tools, if any to use.

Today, my inner knowing says, “Toss the intellect – education, podcasts, and learning and be with the flowers and birds, make art and poetry, and practice smiling.”

What does your inner knowing whisper to you?

Grief does not feel like the wisest business strategy lately – Especially as a coach – A small protector part of me -influenced by “perfection only” past mentors, feels this deep obligation to be cheery and “positive.” (Those same mentors always “shoulded” that concise was imperative. Buahahah. This is not concise. NOTHING I do is concise).

I know that is just a part of me – a part that wants to be accepted and not rejected. I also know that humans need human leaders and public people who hold space and compassion for the wild edges of being human. This is the work I came to do in myself and for the world.

It’s a breeze to hold the pretty center – it’s another thing to lead and BE in the wild edges. Grief, my friends, is not in the shiny center; it is the definition of the wildest and most unpredictable of edges.

The grief of losing Leroy is the easiest of grief. I feel more familiar with some versions of this heartbreaking experience. Francis Weller speaks of the 5 Gates of Grief in his book The Wild Edge Of Sorrow(see image).
Written words of the 5 Gates of Grief by Frances Weller.
1st: Gate: Everything We Love We Will Lose
2nd Gate: The Places that Have not Known Love
3rd Gate: The Sorrows of the World
4th Gate: What We Expected and Did not Receive
5th Gate: Ancestral Grief.

The Grief that is asking for my presence is the 4th Gate. Three recent moments helped me come to this awareness – gifts through connection with others (not with my head in a book of information but through relationships) have helped me SEE clearly.

  • The first was my ADHD diagnosis 11 months ago and how the symptoms have impacted me + and that I harshly judged and hated parts of me – incessantly trying to FIX these defaults for 49 years. It is wobbly holding those as ISness and considering a path forward where I create accessibility for myself instead of trying to fix something that isn’t broken, only different.
  • The 2nd was the ACA Adult Children of Alcoholics Bill of Rights, a beloved shared with me. Already coming into my own awareness of and recovering from people pleasing, over-functioning, over-achieving + boundaries – this document spelled out losses so clearly – in 20 distinct and familiar points. A gut punch…but also a re-set point. And so much grief in my body. My head already gets it, but my body is coming online and integrating, feeling, and releasing. And my thinking parts have a hay day with the discomfort.
  • The third was in a session with my new coach yesterday: I remembered the 18-year-old me – so full of hope and faith, innocence, and ignorance -and physically strong and athletic. Joyful because she didn’t know. She didn’t know because she was young and privileged, and protected. She had so many dreams and so much belief. She was sourced in religion and brainwashed in privilege and ableism. I felt both sorry for her and jealous. I have been beaten down by what has not happened that I had so much faith would in life and work. I’ve been timid around desire and goals. I’ve been too tired to want as I chopped wood and carried water in this last season of ailing parents, ailing dogs, other private family matters never mentioned here, and caring for my business, marriage, mental health, and heart attack.

As I compassionately sit with this – and allow myself to be held in the presence of this grief and validation- my body acclimates to the discomfort, and I remember that I am safe- struggling but not broken. And that it is just moments of struggle. It is not my I AMness.

And then hope comes back in. There is a way to have hope and faith. I don’t have to go back to being the 18-year-old (or any other version of my joyful-faith-filled selves), but I can cultivate the hope and faith, and strong body of the 51-year-old woman I am. This feels both exciting and crushing to be a beginner all over again.
If you read UNARMORED all the way to the end… you’ll have read the part where the HUMANness reconnects with the spark of Spiritual again, followed by a heart attack; that, for me, was a metaphor for restarting my heart with the electricity of SPIRIT.

That’s where I stand today.
Comfortable in my humanness, holding others in theirs, and now ready to build both my physical strength and my faith and prayer – in my own unique way. And ‘strong ankles”. I’ll share that story another day.

I just tossed an entire book into the recycle bin. So much for that prayerful meditation.

I opened a prayer book to a random page – and it landed on a prayer for “emotional distress.”

And the line that pissed me off was this:

“I know that to be disturbed by about one’s life and affairs, even for an instant, is not to trust the Divine Love that is gifted to me daily by God Source.”
.

Instant shame and using trust as a manipulation tool. Another subtle message of, “You are doing it wrong.”
.

To leave no room for discomfort or suffering is NOT LOVE.

๐Ÿ’› Let’s rewrite this:

I know that to be disturbed about one’s life and affairs – is so human. There truly are difficult experiences and seasons, and I know, Divine Love, that you hold me gently, tenderly, softly, even in difficult times. I know that you hold the pains I experience as lovingly as you hold my radiant joy. Thank you, God Source, for your presence in my life exactly as I am.

Shame induces performance and contrived behavior.  Nothing pure – only manipulated and untrue.  Compassion allows for rest and nervous system regulation, allowing the defeated spirit within to regenerate and eventually make space for genuine creativity.

a Hand drawn image that says compassion heals and restores a defeated spirit -white letters outlined in black surrounded by a soft blue green watercolor background.

cartoon image of betty white at gates of heaven with dogsI saw this post this morning and cried. It hit a hope for me — a deep desire. To give and receive so much love until the end of days- even though I never had children of my own.
I recently saw a clip where Betty White was discussing never having had children, her work, her love for her animals, and her love for her late husband. She was able to acknowledge she wasn’t able to work and to have kids. She never retired, and she died with us all thinking even 99 years was too soon for her light and humor to go out.

For the first 25 years of my life, I was sure I would have at least 5 kids. My undergraduate degree is in Human Ecology (Child development, cooking, sewing, finances, – I proudly called it my MRS. Degree.

When college didnโ€™t produce a husband, I went to graduate school looking for one. He found me online. A nice man, and 2 years later, just before we got married, I was diagnosed with an early stage of cancer (carcinoma-in-situ) in my cervix. Surgery was an easy correction, but there were complications after the surgery. Doctors assured me that even with the surgery, I could carry a baby, maybe on my back in a hospital, and probably not to full term.
I still had hopes and dreams for kids.

After 2 and a half years of marriage, my nice guy husband left on a random Wednesday. And that day something in me broke. All my naivetรฉ disintegrated as I slid my back down the door he walked out of.

I didnโ€™t realize it then, but I got up that day from the floor armored, and afraid. I got up that day and dove into work. Sales saved my ass and gave me something I never knew I needed.

I still had hope for marriage and a family and looked for a man who had been divorced, had children, and still believed in love and family after heartbreak. I found him in Bill, and I was thrilled to get to be a bonus mom to his two children.

I never did have my own babies. I have never, ever, been pregnant, despite many opportunities. I also never aggressively tried. It just is. And that comes with relief and grief. My desire was only for the ideal. I knew when I didnโ€™t want to have a boy, only a girl, that I wasnโ€™t meant to have babies of my own.
I grieve the kids I never had. I grieve the daughter that was a mirror of my own image, I grieve the adult relationships with my grown children, and I grieve the legacy of my grandchildren, and I’m still scared when I’m dying, I’ll die alone, maybe I’ll have a sweet dog by my side.

But I donโ€™t just grieve not having children. I also grieve the not-so-great mother I would have been. I grieve the closed and armored heart I would have given to my children unknowingly. I have so much compassion for the young me that didnโ€™t know, and for the me in my 30โ€™s who found this unexpected sense of purpose and fulfillment in my work.

Human development, personal growth, spiritual presence, ownership, we can do hard things. For many, these lessons are given in the vehicle of raising children. For me, they were given in the not raising of children, and in releasing that ideal desire. They were given in the vehicle of creating this path of my own small coaching and self-leadership practice, and in doing my own inner work and self-parenting. Spirit knows there are so many inner child parts of me that need my mothering.

Representation matters. Iโ€™ve long adored Betty White. In parts of her story, I see some of mine. I love my work, in a way that is sometimes shunned by others (who always seem to have children). I love my animals and adore my partner and husband. My only prayer is that I might release more of the quiet, inner burdens one, by one, so that my light might be as bright and funny and sassy as Betty. May I care for those in my family, and life, with an un-armoured heart..and God willing, may I live till 99 with health, sass, humor, and an open heart, willing to live in the delight of life and being. And when I die, may Billy, my parents, and all my doggies be there to greet me in the great EVERYWHERE.

When I began studying SELF-Leadership and SELF-Trust even more intently, I had no idea what #internalfamilysystems was. And yetโ€ฆ right thereโ€ฆ. SELF.

This work has brought me to, and can bring you to, a deeper meeting of your SELF and all your partsโ€ฆ.

Parts are all these thinking and feeling and managing and protecting aspects of us. Many of whom are certainly helpful, some who are distracting, and some who have been exiled into the most guarded parts of yourselves.

The inward journeyโ€ฆ. You are worthy of your own compassion, calmness, and curiosity.

What could shiftโ€ฆ. If you could melt into your own Loving SELF?

At 5 am his tail (the one he wouldn’t have if he were purebred stock) starts to wag. It thumps the bed to let me know he’s ready for breakfast, and oh after that- he needs to pee.

I try to pretend not to hear it, but then he jumps off the bed and wakes his sister up (she is purebred).

Groggily, I head downstairs – and each step of the way- the white one with the tail jumps and smiles and his ears are perked- each morning is Christmas for this boy- he gets to eat and there is nothing…. and I mean NOTHING that makes him happier.

She lumbers sleepily past the food bowls and out to pee- for the first of 50 times this day. She is ambivalent about food… it doesn’t ever sit so well with her anxious belly. Eventually, with my prodding, she slowly eats her “dinner” where 2 melatonin pills are secretly hidden.

Their but-ass early morning meal done- we all crawl upstairs and back into the bed big enough for us all. They have their own king sized beds in the floor under the window- but this special morning time is more appealing. For us all.

She gets on the bed first this morning. I rub her velvety soft ears and I can tell she is pleased. She just sits. Still unsure how to rest into the love she obsessively needs and craves- I remind her to lay down and finally she’s cuddled up next to me. Awkwardly. After almost 3 years with us – she still doesn’t quite know how to relax into the love we give, or into having a big happy-lovey brother.

I think of all the tiny moments that had to occur just right so that these two dogs could wake me and my husband up every morning at 5 am. These two now back asleep along my side while I write.

I know very little of his history and nothing of where he was born, what he looked like as a puppy, or who his doggy parents were. And certainly we no nothing about how he ended up on the streets of Waco, Texas starving, emaciated – and with teeth so damaged from eating rocks, they thought he was older than he probably was. Or why he was so mentally messed up that they thought he was deaf. He’s not. He can hear a banana being peeled from upstairs- even if he’s dead asleep.

We weren’t supposed to get a dog the day we met him at the rescue’s meet and greet at the park.

But as I knelt down to say hi- he burrowed his head into my bosom and stole my soul and heart. We knew we loved him but we’re timid and left the park without claiming him or even leaving our name. Someone else, an “approved adopter” said he’d take him- but his foster mom knew it was us and said – “He’s taken.”

She was a tiny, cinnamon, pure-bred girl. Registration and papers. Dew claws and tail cut before she was even aware she had them. A lovely and well-meaning family paid good money for her and gave her a warm home and lots of toys- a blue football that is still her favorite. A little boy and a little girl loved her.

I don’t know what happened there, or why or how her anxiety and whining started. But it was too much for them and they boarded her as often as they could until we came. We were rescue volunteers and had responded to a request to help rehome their dog. She barked at us like crazy when we first met her- I now know this is her way of saying hello. It’s off-putting at first but underneath it my heart sees she just wants to be seen and loved. We took our report, our photos, and left.

A month later we went to get her- knowing we would foster fail.

5 years ago, he was brought to meet our two senior girls to see if it was a fit. He never left. But after the first 24 hours and him bloodying himself in the crate from separation anxiety, and the howling and high pitched barking- my husband and I looked at what we’d done and thought we’d made a huge mistake. But we also both knew. We KNEW we had to do right by this dog. And we did.

In time he learned that his crate was cozy, that he’d always be fed, and that we ALWAYS come home. He left his anxieties somewhere along the way and is my big, relaxed, cuddly, always hungry baby. My soul dog.

I don’t know if her anxiety will ever melt the way his did. Or if I’ll ever be able to train her to be quiet while I’m on client calls or not to freak out and say hello like a mad woman to every person or dog she sees. The only time she’s at peace is watching squirrels…. and at night when she sleeps. I’ll never stop assuring her that she has a home forever, and is absolutely a part of our family and that I will never, ever leave her at a boarding or vet alone. And maybe someday she’ll learn to snuggle and relax and really trust our love. Maybe not. That’s ok. Either way, she’s home.

So many little pieces had to fall into place to have these perfectly imperfect two at my side this very moment. So many forks in the road that could have put them down different paths. But somehow the angels made sure these two rescued dogs- landed in my home— and in my bed… and in my heart where they will stay forever.

It’s now almost 6 am. The white one just put his huge head across my ankles and sighed. A signal for me to put the phone down and go back to sleep.

And so I will. Full of gratitude for being woken up at the but crack of dawn every single day.
